Full of painstaking research, this is the definitive guide to the Eames' furnitureThrough models, material studies, prototypes and production examples of the Eames estate held at the Vitra Design Museum, this publication aims to reconstruct the genesis of the most relevant furniture designs by Charles and Ray Eames and shed light on their influence on the development of new and innovative materials. New insights into the thought processes and work practices of this legendary couple are revealed, designers whose work was driven by philosophical ideals that privileged knowledge, discovery and discipline, and embraced the potential of technology and science for the common good.Among the most important American designers, Charles Eames (1907–78) and Ray Eames (1912–88) are celebrated for their groundbreaking work in furniture, architecture, exhibitions, graphic design, toys and film. Charles and Ray married in 1941 and moved to California where they pursued their furniture design work with molding plywood. During World War II they were commissioned by the US Navy to produce molded plywood splints, stretchers and experimental glider shells. Their molded plywood chair was called “the chair of the century” by the famous architecture critic Esther McCoy.
The creative duo Charles Eames (1907–1978) and Ray Kaiser Eames (1912–1988) transformed the visual character of America. Though best known for their furniture, the husband and wife team were also forerunners in architecture, textile design, photography, and film. The Eameses’ work defined a new, multifunctional modernity, exemplary for its integration of craft and design, as well as for the use of modern materials, notably plywood and plastics. The Eames Lounge Chair Wood, designed with molded plywood technology, became a defining furniture piece of the 20th century, while the couple’s contribution to the Case Study Houses project not only made inventive use of industrial materials but also developed an adaptable floor plan of multipurpose spaces which would become a hallmark of postwar modern architecture. From the couple’s earliest furniture experiments to their seminal short film Powers of Ten, this book covers all the aspects of the illustrious Eames repertoire and its revolutionary impact on middle-class American living.

In 1945, Charles and Ray Eames designed the legendary Plywood Elephant. Only two prototypes of this complex design were manufactured, which went directly to an exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Of the two known prototypes, only one remains in the Eames Family Archives. Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants were found in Charles' photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Plywood Elephant was originally designed as a toy for children, but it also a striking sculptural object that makes a statement with its vigorous curves and delightful character.
Description: Almost no other animal enjoys such popularity as the elephant. Admired for its majestic size and loved for its proverbial good-humor, it is part of our everyday experience as a child's cuddly toy, a storybook character and a majestic creature.Charles and Ray Eames also succumbed to their charms and in 1945 designed a toy elephant made of plywood. However, it never made it into mass production. The Eames elephant is NOW AVAILABLE for the first time in a plastic version for those it was originally intended for: children! Whether used as a toy (also outdoors) or a decorative item in a children's room - this friendly-looking animal with its distinctive, over-sized ears is bound to bring cheer and enjoyment to many a child's and parent's heart. Jean Prouvé & Charles & Ray Eames: Constructive Furniture
In the fields of design, architecture, and engineering, Jean Prouvé (1901–1984) is widely considered one of the most versatile and innovative designers of the 20th century. Yet surprisingly, only a relatively small number of collectors and cognoscente outside France are familiar with his work. Alongside Charles and Ray Eames, to whose oeuvre Vitra has dedicated itself since 1957, Jean Prouvé can truly be considered the second major "constructor" in 20th century design. The small book delves into the manifest differences between the Eames' work and Prouvé's designs – differences that are quite evidently the product of the respective technological climate in which these marvelous designers were active. For many years now, the Vitra Design Museum collection has focused on Jean Prouvé as well as Charles and Ray Eames.
Pairing words of design wisdom with classic works, Essential Eames encapsulates the duo's achievementsCharles and Ray Eames are among the most influential designers of the 20th century. Enthusiastic and tireless experimenters, this beloved husband-and-wife duo moved fluidly between the fields of photography, film, architecture, exhibition-making and furniture and product design. The Eames Office was a hub of activity where the Eameses and their collaborators produced an array of pioneering designs, communicating their ideas with a boundless creativity that defined their careers. The Eameses embraced the joy of trial and error and approached design as a way of life. From personal letters, photographs, drawings and artwork, to their products, models, multimedia installations and furniture, Essential Eames includes not only some of the designs for which they are best known, but provides an insight into the lives of the Eameses, the Eames Office and the breadth of their pioneering work, bringing their ideas and playful spirit to life.
