The Praetorian Guard (Elite)

The Praetorian Guard of Imperial Rome was the power behind the throne, with the ability to make or break an emperor. As the main body of troops in Rome, they were the emperor's instrument to discourage plotting and rebellion and to crush unrest. The emperor's most immediate line of defence, they could also be his most deadly enemies. This book details the organization, dress and history of the Praetorian Guard from the time of the late Republic to the Guard's effective destruction at the battle of Milvian Bridge in AD 312. Numerous illustrations vividly depict the uniforms and weaponry of this elite fighting unit.

The Praetorians

Jean Lartéguy's unflinching sequel to The Centurions, a searing novel of modern warfare admired by military experts, with a foreword by General Stanley McChrystal   Based on the events of May 1958 in France and Algeria, The Praetorians picks up in the footsteps of The Centurions, which was called “a stunning reflection of modern war” by Stanley McChrystal. After turning to tactics of guerilla warfare, a group of French paratroopers serving in the Algerian War is called to answer for actions they consider necessary, however immoral. Fearing another loss of French honor, they plot a coup that results in the return to power of Charles de Gaulle and the death of one of their own. With resonance to modern conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, The Praetorians further develops some of Lartéguy’s most persistent and pertinent themes: counterinsurgency, the ugly, morally conflicted nature of modern war, and the seemingly unbridgeable gulf between the experiences of soldiers and of the civilians they serve.   For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Privateer Press Skorne - Praetorian Karax Model Kit

The proud Praetorian karax form imposing phalanxes of interlocking shields to impale closing enemies, sweep aside all incoming blows and protect themselves and those behind them from explosive blasts. Endless training in unit tactics removes all trace of individual initiative and allows karax to advance resolutely into even the most fearsome artillery barrage as shrapnel and fire wash harmlessly over their shields. The Praetorian Karax unit comes in a box (PIP74079). A player may field up to two Praetorian Karax units for each warlock in a Skorne army. This box contains all the parts necessary to assemble one Praetorian Karax unit (1 Leader and 9 Grunts), plus a color stat card and 30mm plastic bases. SPECIAL NOTE: PIP74079 contains the same Mk II stat card as PIP74032. The models in this box represent the same figures in the game. PIP74079 replaces PIP74032 and PIP74033 by offering their contents in a complete unit. However, the models in PIP74079 are new sculpts and therefore look different from the models found in PIP74032 and PIP74033. In addition, these models are plastic rather than metal. The replaced PIPs will no longer be available from Privateer Press beginning December 1, 2014.

Dog Company: A True Story of American Soldiers Abandoned by Their High Command

The Army does not want you to read this book. It does not want to advertise its detention system that coddles enemy fighters while putting American soldiers at risk. It does not want to reveal the new lawyered-up Pentagon war ethic that prosecutes U.S. soldiers and Marines while setting free spies who kill Americans. This very system ambushed Captain Roger Hill and his men.Hill, a West Point grad and decorated combat veteran, was a rising young officer who had always followed the letter of the military law. In 2007, Hill got his dream job: infantry commander in the storied 101st Airborne. His new unit, Dog Company, 1-506th, had just returned stateside from the hell of Ramadi. The men were brilliant in combat but unpolished at home, where paperwork and inspections filled their days. With tough love, Hill and his First Sergeant, an old-school former drill instructor named Tommy Scott, turned the company into the top performers in the battalion. Hill and Scott then led Dog Company into combat in Afghanistan, where a third of their men became battlefield casualties after just six months. Meanwhile, Hill found himself at war with his own battalion commander, a charismatic but difficult man who threatened to relieve Hill at every turn. After two of his men died on a routine pat...

The Centurions

The military cult classic with resonance to the wars in Iraq and Vietnam—now back in printWhen The Centurions was first published in 1960, readers were riveted by the thrilling account of soldiers fighting for survival in hostile environments. They were equally transfixed by the chilling moral question the novel posed: how to fight when the “age of heroics is over.” As relevant today as it was half a century ago, The Centurions is a gripping military adventure, an extended symposium on waging war in a new global order, and an essential investigation of the ethics of counterinsurgency. Featuring a foreword by renowned military expert Robert D. Kaplan, this important wartime novel will again spark debate about controversial tactics in hot spots around the world. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines.
