Pineapple Sage - A Favorite for Hummingbirds and You - Live Plant - 3" Pot

A small perennial evergreen subshrub, with woody stems, colorful leaves, and blue to purplish flowers. It is a member of the mint family, Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region and commonly grown as a kitchen and medicinal herb or as an ornamental garden plant. Dense, uniform, ornamental plants. Uses: Fresh, dried or cooked to flavor or garnish. Pineapple Sage should be called Hummingbird Highway. Its profuse bright red tubular flowers and its attraction to hummingbirds are reason enough to plant this late season bloomer. Pineapple Sage does have a pineappley fragrance, and a fresh edible flower. The flowers are reminiscent of Honeysuckle and make a colorful addition to salads, fruit cocktails or any garnish. They are particularly attractive with yellow or green bell pepper. They can be sugared and used to garnish cakes or cookie platters.

This variety was introduced as an ornamental garden plant around 1870. It is grown as an annual in cooler climates. The scent of the leaves when crushed resembles pineapple, although the strength of the aroma is dependent upon weather and moisture levels. Grown as an annual in colder areas where it will not survive the winter, Pineapple sage is fairly fast growing. Pineapple sage blooms in the early part of October, producing tubular scarlet-red flowers. Pineapple sage leaves have a fuzzy appearance. This plant is often grown primarily for its vibrant foliage that contrasts well with so many other annual or perennial plants with typical green leaves. It is easily grown in a container, which is more convenient for overwintering indoors. Grows to 40" Full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Pinch plants when young to produce more branching for denser growth. It has few pests outdoors and is not preferred by deer Both the leaves and flowers are edible, and when fresh can be used whole as a garnish or chopped to add to salads or desserts. Hardy in zones 8-11
