The definitive, fully illustrated state-by-state atlas of the shifting alignments, historic sites, and current points of interest along the United States' beloved Route 66.Route 66 changed immensely in the six decades between its opening in 1926 and its removal from the U.S. highway system in 1985. Synopsis: The Great Depression of 1929 brought many unfamiliar problems and unusual situations into the lives of the families and individuals who were caught up in its terrifying grasp. The day-to-day worry of how to put a roof over their heads and put food in their mouths was always foremost in their minds. Most of the families who found their way to Goldroad when it reopened in March 1937 were grateful for the opportunity, for the first time in five or more years, to once again feel secure in their ability to provide for their families. Day-to-day living in Goldroad offered many varied experiences. ----One such happening was the great Okie migration that made its way along the now famous Historic Route 66 that passed through Goldroad. Desperate families in old worn-out cars and trucks with all their earthly goods tied on top, made their way to California, the promised land, which was just a few short miles from Goldroad across the Colorado River at Topock. The Grapes of Wrath movie passed before their eyes almost on a daily basis. ----Another was the surprise attack December 7, 1941 by Japan on Pearl Harbor which threw our country into World War II and quickly put an end to life in Goldroad and sealed the fate of Goldroad as an operating gold mine for the next fifty years. An encyclopedia with a twist, The Route 66 Encyclopedia presents alphabetical entries on Route 66 history, landmarks, personalities, and culture, from Bobby Troup’s anthem “Route 66” to The Grapes of Wrath to the Wigwam Motel, illustrated with over 1,000 old and new, color and black-and-white photos and memorabilia. You'll learn about Jack Rittenhouse and Will Rogers as well as the contributions of lesser-known figures like Arthur Nelson and Angel Delgadillo. With references to the old (including the history of the U Drop Inn Café in Texas) and new (including a section about the recent Cars movie), The Route 66 Encyclopedia provides a sweeping look at a highway that has become more than just a road. These pages cover the history of Route 66 and the people who played a role in its transformation from highway to icon between 1926 and the present, but like the highway itself, this work does not fit within the traditional confines of generalities or terminology. Yes, this is an encyclopedia, a reference book for all things Route 66. However, it is also a time capsule, a travel guide, a history book, a memorial, a testimonial, and a chronicle of almost a century of societal evolution.

Historic Route 66 Arizona
On the last day of our trip, we took our time and drove the beautiful, historic Route 66 from Williams AZ to Oatman AZ with a slight detour on our way home through Joshua Tree National Park. I was an honor to listen to Angel tell his story; let's always remember that we as individuals (and together as a community) have the power to make change happen!
