I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Pack of 25)

Over the years I have talked to thousands of people who have asked me how to find their way to God. Some have sat in church pews all their lives but never come to personally know God. Others have sought for ultimate meaning in all sorts of ways but never found the peace of mind for which they were searching. Some simply realize that there is something vital missing in their lives. The Bible teaches that this sense of lostness is rooted in the fact that we live in a fallen world. We are all handicapped by a sin nature: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). And despite our best efforts, we are unable to remove the haunting weight of guilt that separates us from our Creator. God sent his Son to solve the dilemma caused by our sin. "God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Jesus Christ made the way to God for us by his death on the cross. He purchased our salvation by the shedding of his blood. His death and resurrection made a new and everlasting covenant between God and humanity. Jesus told his disciples, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). He did not merely point the way to God. He himself cl...

No Greater Love (Pack of 25) (Proclaiming the Gospel)

No Greater Love Rembrandt, one of the greatest painters the world has ever known, did something amazing in his universally respected work, The Raising of the Cross. He included himself in the painting as one of those who crucified Jesus! It's a truth we each need to acknowledge for ourselves. Why would he do that? Why would Rembrant do such a thing? Because he believed what the Bible says about us--that we have all failed God and are guilty before him. "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23), and "the wages of sin is death [eternal separation from God in a place of punishment]" (Romans 6:23). Left to ourselves, our ultimate destiny will be to experience the wrath of God forever. Why would Jesus die? But God offers us hope in the good news of Jesus Christ. Jesus is fully God. But he also became fully man when he came to earth to be born as a baby so he could make a way for our sins to be forgiven. Then later, as a grown man, he died on the cross, taking the punishment for our sins, dying in our place. That is why just before Jesus died, he shouted, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46). He was taking the awful punishment for our sins upon himself. "Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous [Christ] for the unrighteous [u...

Tomorrow May Be Too Late (Pack of 25) (Proclaiming the Gospel)

Tomorrow May Be Too LateOnce, long ago, a prince asked his tutor to prepare him for the life beyond.“There is plenty of time for that when you are old,” the tutor replied.“No!” exclaimed the prince. “I have been to the cemetery and measured the graves, and there are many shorter than I am.”The prince was wise, for the Bible says, “What is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). Tomorrow may be too late to take God seriously! One of Life’s Most Dangerous WordsA cartoon was once published in three parts. In the first scene, there was a young man seated at a desk. At his shoulder stood Jesus Christ, inviting him to be saved. Politely he told the Lord that he was just launching his career and had no time for anything else. The second scene showed the same man, now middle-aged. He was heavier and well-dressed, and his larger desk was covered with papers and reports. Again Christ stood at his elbow. But again the man replied with the same answer—“No time. Busy. Tomorrow!”The last picture showed an old and graying man at his desk. At his shoulder stood, not the Savior, but the gaunt, bony specter of Death. Speaking in hollow tones, Death declared, “I have come for you.” The businessman, with fright...

Hope for Hard Times (Pack of 25) (Proclaiming the Gospel)

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing.”8                           For the family facing foreclosure… for the father diagnosed with terminal cancer… for the wife struggling to conceive… for the young girl considering abortion… for the thousands who lost jobs and life savings…there is hope. The Bible says that each of us has been created by God…that he loves us…and that he wants us to have a fulfilling life. “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly,” Jesus said.1  He meant a  life that goes beyond “mere existence” to a fulfilling life lived in harmony with the Creator’s knowledge of us and his desires for us.But there is something that separates us from this “abundant life” that God intended. The Bible says that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”2 It is because of this sin, this disobedience towards God, that every person is separated from him: “your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.”3 And even worse is the consequence of sin, eternal separation from God—“the wages [cost] of sin is death.”4However, in his love and mercy, God sent his sinless Son, Jesus, ...

Four Things God Wants You to Know (Pack of 25) (Proclaiming the Gospel)

1. You need to be saved from sin’s penalty All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way. Isaiah 53:6 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12 For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23 The wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23 Each of us will give an account of himself to God. Romans 14:12 It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. Hebrews 9:27 2. You cannot save yourself Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3 He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy. Titus 3:5 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. James 2:10 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” John 14:6 3. Jesus has provided for your salvation For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God. 1 Peter 3:18 For our sake he [God] made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corin...

Set Free (Pack of 25) (Proclaiming the Gospel)

SET FREE!It’s a stifling hot August night in Georgia. Over 700 inmates and 50 community workers have gathered in the auditorium of the Atlanta penitentiary. Chuck Colson, who has come to speak to the prisoners, looks over the restless crowd—half white, half black—and begins speaking…––––––––––––––A lot of you think of Christians as those nice, white, middle-class people who go to church on Sunday and never get into trouble. And you say, “No, that’s not for me. I don’t want any part of that. They can afford to be nice. They don’t know what it is to be hungry. They don’t know what it is to see their children starving. They don’t know what it is to be in prison.” And you’re right—most of them don’t.Let me tell you a little about the man Jesus Christ, because he did know about these things and He cared. Jesus was God and he was man. And when he was nailed to that cross, he hurt. He suffered there for every one of us.Let me tell you what he said in his very first sermon: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke...

Father's Love Letter (Ats) (Pack of 25)

An intimate message from God to you. The words you're about to read are true, and they will change your life if you let them. This letter comes from the heart of God to tell you that he loves you, and that he is the Father you've been looking for all your life. The promises God makes in these words from the Bible are directed to his children--those who have placed their trust in God's Son, Jesus, as their Savior. And the good news is, you too can become a child of God! Be sure to read the last page of this pamphlet to find out more. My Child, You may not know me, but I know everything about you (Ps 139:1). I know when you sit down and when you rise up (Ps 139:2). I am familiar with all your ways (Ps 139:3)--even the very hairs on your head are numbered (Matt 10:29-31). You were made in my image (Gen 1:27). In me you live and move and have your being, for you are my offspring (Acts 17:28). I knew you even before you were conceived (Jer 1:4-5). I chose you when I planned creation (Eph 1:11-12). You were not a mistake, for all your days are written in my book (Ps 139:15-16). I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live (Acts 17:26). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps 139:14). I knit you together in your mother's womb (Ps 139:13), and brought you for...

Quest for Joy (Pack of 25) (Proclaiming the Gospel)

Have you ever known true joy? Do you have this joy in your life right now? If you are longing for fulfillment, for true joy, please read on—this tract may assist you in your quest.1. God Created Us For His Glory“Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth… whom I created for my glory” (Isaiah 43:6-7).God made us to magnify his greatness—the way telescopes magnify stars. He created us to put his goodness and truth and beauty and wisdom and justice on display. The greatest display of God’s glory comes from deep delight in all that he is. This means that God gets the praise and we get the pleasure. God created us so that he is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.2. Every Human Should Live For God’s Glory“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).If God made us for his glory, clearly we should live for his glory. Our duty comes from his design. So our first obligation is to show God’s value by being satisfied with all that he is for us. This is the essence of loving God (Matthew 22:37) and trusting him (1 John 5:3-4) and being thankful to him (Psalm 100:2-4). It is the root of all true obedience, especially loving others (Colossians 1:4-5).3. All of Us Have Failed T...

Your Ticket to Heaven (Pack of 25)

Your Ticket to Heaven May I offer you a ticket to heaven? You don’t have to pay for it, and that’s a good thing, because you could never afford to buy it! It’s free, but only because someone has already paid the ultimate price for it. God loves you and not only wants you to have a fulfilling life on earth, he also wants you to live with him in heaven forever. He’s the one who offers you a paid-in-full ticket. No one wants to go to hell where there will be no joy and no pleasures whatsoever, and God doesn’t want anyone to go there either. The Bible says that God is “not wishing that any should perish” (2 Peter 3:9). But there is a problem with getting that free ticket. We have all done wrong—we have all sinned, haven’t we? God’s Word says “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves” (1 John 1:8). Sin pollutes—it makes us unclean, unfit for God’s presence in that wonderful, perfect place called heaven. Sin penalizes—it separates us from a sinless God, “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).  In short, our sinfulness blocks the delivery of the ticket that we need to get into heaven! Who paid for it? Wait! There’s good news! Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to be born and to live his life without sin. He “suffered once for...

Also available in a 3-pack with LIVE AT ORCHESTRA HALL, DETROIT and HERE'S TO LIFE.Personnel includes: Joe Williams, Marlena Shaw (vocals); Jerry Peters (piano).Recorded at Conway Recording, Hollywood, California on September 20-23, 1994.Williams recorded this collection of spirituals for Telarc at the age of 75, just four years before his death. Though this is certainly a minor work in his catalog, Williams' performances here are very restrained and quite beautiful, and his voice shows little sign of wear. R&B composer Johnny Pate's arrangements are steeped in R&B, soul, and gospel but marred by the overuse of synthesizer. Nonetheless, they serve to bring out an R&B/pop side of Williams that is quite exciting.Several of the tracks feature duets with Marlena Shaw, who shows off her fervent Gospel side. The most moving tracks are the very simple and unadorned versions of "Were You There?," "In My Heart," and "The Lord's Prayer," each sung in an amazingly rich and resonant baritone and accompanied by Jerry Peter's sensitive piano.

Although singer/guitarist Odetta Gordon is most closely identified with the collegiate folk revival of the late '50s, she began her career singing blues in coffeehouses, and continued to play the blues regularly throughout her recording career. It's not surprising, since the blues is a vernacular form not at all far removed from the story-form ballads that are a huge part of the folk tradition, and so the dual focus on ballads and blues on this excellently sequenced 18-track compilation makes perfect sense.Opening with a rousing version of the gospel standard "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and closing with Odetta's famous "Spiritual Trilogy," the religious underpinnings of much of Odetta's work are readily apparent throughout. Elsewhere, blues standards like "Lowlands" and "'Buked and Scorned" sit beside classic folk ballads like "Greensleeves" and "The Fox." BEST OF BALLADS AND BLUES is an excellent introduction to this underappreciated artist.

This rock & roll Hall Of Famer had a tremendous impact on the R&B trends of the '50s and '60s, and consequently on rock & roll, Motown, and even newer, funkier styles of jazz. The composer of "The Twist" and many other now-classic hits, Hank Ballard had a career often overshadowed by those whom he had influenced; both James Brown and Chubby Checker notably borrowed from Ballard's innovations. On GREATEST HITS, we hear why Brown and Checker became enamored of this former Ford assembly line worker's style. There's a hard gospel edge and intense, passionate singing on all 12 tracks, and 1953's "Get It," replete with the little "ouwww's" that are now associated most often with James Brown, is a prime example of Ballard's bluesy, Southern-fried attitude. Other titles of note include Ballard's series of "Annie" songs: "Work with Me Annie," "Annie Had a Baby" and "Annie's Aunt Fannie". This collection of ballads and blues shuffles is a window into the true history of R&B.
